Autumn at the Flower Farm

by
L'Automne à la Ferme Florale

As summer slowly fades into the beautiful colors of fall, we at the farm are starting to feel the wear and tear of the hectic summer season. The weather is getting cooler, and we're starting to feel the urge to slow down and spend some quality time away from work. We're eager to dive into the current year and plan for the next season with some good cookies and coffee by the fire. However, there's still work to do, and not least of it is physical! It's time to dig up the dahlia tubers and dig the trenches to plant the bulbs that will bloom next spring.

We're mentally starting to motivate ourselves to give that last little "boom" of work because we know how rewarding it will be after winter to see our magnificent bulbs come to life and dazzle us with all their beauty. There's nothing like the sight of a firework display of flowers to get us out of winter and dive, all smiles, into the magic of spring!

Dig the trenches, plant the bulbs and dig up the dahlia tubers.

Instead of digging huge trenches with a shovel, for several years we have been renting a small mechanical shovel to make this task more efficient, to save our backs, our morale and to have a little fun, given the scale of the project .

And for Chloe, it's a moment of pure joy. She loves handling machinery throughout the season, but the backhoe in the fall is the cherry on top, transforming a major challenge into an eagerly awaited activity!

Once the work is finished, seeing all those bulbs and imagining what they will become in the spring in our gardens really makes us excited.

Digging up dahlia tubers also requires a lot of effort. This year, we unfortunately made some poor choices regarding their cultivation. They were planted in a ditch, and the sustained torrential rains of early summer caused more than 70% of our plants to rot. This is the first time in 10 years that we have faced a challenge of this magnitude... However, we are successfully cultivating those that are still alive in order to offer you a great tuber sale next spring!

Bulbs to plant in autumn

Autumn also heralds the long-awaited bulb sale! Despite dealing with some classic supply issues with our suppliers (because yes, our bulbs come from Holland!), Raphaëlle loves this time of year when she processes hundreds of orders and thinks about the thousands of bulbs that will bloom in your gardens.

We've been working hard since April to bring you a breathtaking selection of unusual bulbs. It's an exciting time of year at Floramama!

What keeps us going? Seeing all those flowers in your gardens and those smiles on your faces! We loved receiving your messages throughout spring, sharing your favorites and the joy of seeing this magnificent colorful spectacle in your homes. We felt your joy and we thank you for sharing it with us!

Autumn at the flower farm is certainly an intense time, as we prepare for the next spring bloom after a busy summer growing and harvesting season, while remaining grateful for the moments we share with you. Thank you for being part of this adventure with us, and for accompanying us in this beautiful transition to the next season.

Tell us, which varieties are you looking forward to growing in spring? Which will be or already are your favorites?
