Last weekend was the autumn equinox, the famous harvest moon! A time for harvesting in our vegetable gardens, a time when nature begins to display its flamboyant colors of red, orange, and yellow, a time when the cooler weather makes us want to put wood in the stove! But, as the daylight diminishes, the list of things to do outside during this change of season increases! It's the time when we plant our bulbs that will brighten up next spring.
Today, we decided to share with you our favorite tulip varieties. Tulips are many people's favorite flowers for their elegance, textures, and incredible color palette. They are the ultimate symbol of spring's renewal and bring us the joy of color after the long, cold, white (or brown...) winter months. As you know, at Floramama, we're a bit crazy about specialty tulips, and it's not about to stop!
So here are our 7 all-time favorite tulip varieties.
Dreamtouch
This variety is simply incredible. Its unique color is a deep plum with a thin white border that delicately outlines each petal. The flowers are massive, and their mature appearance is so striking that they were immortalized in our "Tulips" poster. Fun fact: we had ordered Dreamtouch by mistake, thinking we were ordering the Drumline, which we adore. What a surprise! In the end, it was one of our biggest favorites, shared by our customers who are just as charmed. Even our agronomist took photos of it during his spring visit! This tulip celebrates beauty in every moment of its bloom.
NorthCap
The earliest tulip we know! It's the first to bloom in our tunnels and our field, which allows us to extend the tulip season! Last year, NorthCap bloomed a full week before our other varieties. Its large, caressing creamy white flowers, adorned with a touch of burnt yellow in the center that develops over time, are a real spectacle. As it grows, its petals take on the appearance of swan feathers, adding to its delicacy. If you haven't seen it yet, it's definitely worth discovering.
Exotic Emperor
This tulip is grace incarnate. It evokes a swan's neck, both for its colors and its impressive length. Once ripe, it opens fully to display elegant, elongated petals with a magnificent buttery center that fades to ivory at the tips. The exterior of the petals is adorned with variegated, ascending sepals that form a majestic crown around the flower. This is the most refined white tulip variety we grow and has definitely been one of our favorites for several years.
Copper Image
If you're looking for colors that evolve over time, Copper Image is for you. Starting out as a deep salmon with hints of pink, it gradually lightens, adding to its charm. Much loved by both our team and our customers, it's simply magnificent. However, be careful with its slightly fragile stem during harvesting—it deserves careful handling.
The Belle Epoque
What more can we say about this legendary tulip? The Belle Époque is the star of our selection, and its name perfectly reflects its timeless elegance. Its hues shift from antique pink/plum to shades of peach and burnt caramel, offering a dramatic transformation day after day. A true dream flower, a must-have for anyone who appreciates floral beauty.
Drumline
With its rich pink color and ivory-edged petals, Drumline leaves no one indifferent. This stunning variety adds a touch of sophistication and elegance to any bouquet. It's one of our favorites that we love to plant and watch bloom every year.
Queensland
When you see Queensland, you literally melt. This fringed tulip is a true blend of whimsy and sweetness. It starts with salmon shades, then turns pale pink, creating an ever-changing spectacle. Not only that, but it's also fragrant, with sweet, sweet notes. Although its stems are a little shorter than other varieties, this is hands down one of our favorite fringed tulips.
These varieties represent the backbone of our cut flower production year after year. We can count on them to produce flowers of exceptional quality and amaze our customers. As a bonus, they are a pleasure to harvest and arrange in bouquets!
