Sow indoors 4 to 6 weeks before the last frost, then transplant outdoors while the weather is still cool.

Harvest when stems are mature and firm. Sap irritates skin and eyes. Wear gloves. Immediately after harvesting, immerse the stem ends in boiling water for 7 to 10 seconds to stop the flow of the milky sap.
