Cynoglossum amabile

Blue flowers are rather rare at Floramama, but these have a special place in our gardens. In addition to blooming in the first year, unlike other forget-me-not varieties, these are uniform and produce a beautiful first crop of long, sturdy stems followed by a second abundant crop of branching side shoots. The delicate sapphire-colored flowers are very attractive to bees.

Sow indoors 4 to 6 weeks before the last frost and transplant outdoors when all risk of frost has passed, or sow directly outdoors when all risk of frost has passed. For a staggered harvest, plant 2 plants 4 to 5 weeks apart. Placing seedlings in the dark (e.g., under a seedbed) can aid germination.

Harvest during the coolest part of the day when half the flowers are fully developed. Place them directly into cool water and let them sit for a few hours before arranging.
